Masque Heaume Alunga BEMBE Masque "Ecwabuka ya alunga (la tête d'Alunga) ou Echwaboka (Pol Pierre Gossiaux)
Il est visiblement ancien, assez petit (31cm) pour un masque de ce type, je n'en ai encore croisé que deux de cette taille jusqu'ici
Il représente un esprit de la brousse, m'ma mwitu, et est utilisé au sein de la société Alunga, lors des cérémonies d'acceptation des nouveaux membres ainsi que dans les rites de chasse.
Ces grands casques cylindriques et janiformes aux yeux démesurés, sont régulièrement assimilés à des représentations de hiboux, il y a d’ailleurs des danses où le masque joue ce rôle
D’après Hahner-Herzog, les deux visages sont destinés à invoquer la nature omnivoyante de l'esprit du masque, une capacité qui lui permet de réconcilier les forces opposées de la nature, telles que masculin/féminin ou jour/nuit
PP Gossiaux y ajoute les notions positif/négatif, les points cardinaux, les quatre heures cruciales de la journée (6h, 12h, 18h, 24h)
Les Bembe sont établis dans l'est de la République démocratique du Congo, au nord du lac Tanganyika. (Ne pas confondre avec les Beembe qui s'orthographie parfois aussi Bembe et qui sont un peuple du groupe Kongo)
Ils se considèrent comme les descendants des Lega dont ils sont culturellement proches. Ainsi, le Bwamè des Bembe présente beaucoup de points communs avec le Bwami des Lega.

It is clearly old, quite small (12 1/4 inches - 31 cm) for a mask of this type, I have only come across two of this size so far
It represents a spirit of the bush, m'ma mwitu, and is used within the Alunga society, during ceremonies for the acceptance of new members as well as in hunting rites.
These large cylindrical and janiform helmets with disproportionate eyes, are regularly assimilated to representations of owls, (there are dances where the mask plays this role)
According to Hahner-Herzog, the two faces are meant to invoke the all-seeing nature of the mask's spirit, an ability that allows it to reconcile opposing forces of nature, such as masculine/feminine or day/night.
PP Gossiaux adds the notions positive / negative, the cardinal points, the four crucial hours of the day (6h, 12h, 18h, 24h)
The Bembe are established in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, north of Lake Tanganyika. (Not to be confused with the Beembe who are sometimes also spelled Bembe and who are a people of the Kongo group)
They consider themselves as the descendants of the Lega to whom they are culturally close. Thus, the Bwamè of the Bembe has many points in common with the Bwami of the Lega.
