SUPERBE ET RARE STATUE MASCULINE
LUBA
LUBA

Male statues are very rare among Luba, who sculpt much more often female statues
"While the female image is abundant in Luba art, male figures are exceptionally rare..........Whereas the male gender of the present figure as well as the posture of hands held to the abdomen relate to Hemba ancestor figures, the design of the openwork four-braided hairstyle and the iconography of the tongue emerging between slightly parted lips are typically Luba." (part of the description of the Luba male statue sold by Sothebys at a price of $ 3,600,000 in New York on May 15, 2015, which applies perfectly well for this one as well
The Luba are a great people in eastern DRC.
Their caryatid seats, their cup holders, chiefs' sticks, arrow holders, adzes and ancestral statues are very famous and among the most valued objects in African Art.
