In the style of the Master of Warua
Male statues are very rare among the Luba who carve female statues much more often.
" While the male gender of this statue as well as the posture of the hands tied to the abdomen relate to the figures of Hemba ancestors, the design of the openwork hairstyle with four braids and the iconography of the tongue emerging between the lips slightly discarded are typically Luba ." (part of the description of the Luba male statue sold by Sothebys for $3,600,000 in New York on May 15, 2015, which applies perfectly well for this one as well)
The Luba are a large people of eastern DRC
Their seats with caryatids, their carriers of cups, staffs of chiefs, arrow holders, adzes and statues of ancestors are very famous and among the most prized objects in African Art.
