CONGO DRC

Rare "fetish" statue (Nkishi)
LUBA KASAI

Beautiful fetish with very neat workmanship, typical of the Western Luba, in whom we feel the influence of Songye neighbors
Standing male figure, hands around the umbilical zone, two antelope horns stuck on the skull. The hairstyle, with its two long braids is impressive. This statue obviously reminds us of the one illustrated in Luba (Neyt, 1993, page 164)

The Nkishi are fetishes, provided with a magic charge, the " bijimba ", inserted here in the horn. As often, in Luba art, the work is imbued with great serenity

The Luba are a large people of eastern DRC. Their seats with caryatids, their carriers of cups, staffs of chiefs, arrow holders, adzes and cult statues are very famous and among the most prized objects in African Art.
