EXCEPTIONAL GREAT FETISH SONGYE (Nkishi).

Beautiful fetish, very expressive, the silhouette is slender and graceful, almost soothing when compared with some very massive and "aggressive" looking fetishes
Necklace of old glass beads, cowrie eyes, a horn stuck on the forehead

A statue with a very very similar look (except the ringed neck, the absence of horn and the patina) was sold at Christie's in 2013 (link and/or photos on request)


Mankishi (plural of "Nkishi") are figures of power,
They serve as relays with the spirits of the dead, very present in religion...
They are used in "magical" rites serving the interest and well-being of an individual or the entire community. (Art and Power in the Savannah of Central Africa, p. 72-73)
