Powerful Idimu LEGA Mask

(Comes from a pair)


The face is covered with kaolin and in the shape of a heart, which is characteristic of the Lega, on the other hand, the shape of this beautiful mask is almost spherical, which is not very common.

Although the Idimu masks are significantly larger than the Lukwakongo maskettes, they are very close stylistically. These are collective masks used during ceremonies reserved for high-ranking Bwami

These masks were used within the framework of this association which organized the social structure and ensured the stability of the Lega community.
The Lega are a Bantu forest people of Central Africa, established in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in the provinces of South Kivu and Maniema. 

This mask is part of a pair, most likely by the hand of the same artist
