Superb statuette Iginga Lega

An astonishingly similar piece at the aesthetic level is illustrated in "Affinités Electives: Alexis Bonew et les Arts du Congo" Sotheby's Dec 2014 sale catalog (lot n°3 awarded 27,500). Link on request.

These statuettes, generically called Iginga, were used within the framework of the Bwami, an association which organized the social structure and ensured the stability of the Lega community.

The Lega are a Bantu forest people of Central Africa, established in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in the provinces of South Kivu and Maniema.
