 Beau masque d'initiation BEMBE
zoomorphe hibou.


Masque atypique, avec sa bouche tordue qui lui donne un petit air gouailleur irrésistible

 Appelés "Eluba va butende na cwecwe" ou "Emangungu" ces masques étaient portés pendant les rites d'initiation des jeunes gens.

"L'animal qui domine les hauteurs de la forêt, le maître de la mort, est le hibou (cwecwe : terme générique). Son masque protégera, notamment, les circoncis batende du regard vénéneux des sorciers" (PP Gossiaux, page 19)

Les Bembe sont établis dans l'est de la République démocratique du Congo, au nord du lac Tanganyika. (Ne pas confondre avec les Beembe qui s'orthographie parfois aussi Bembe et qui sont un peuple du groupe Kongo)

Ils se considèrent comme les descendants des Lega dont ils sont culturellement proches. Ainsi, le Bwamè des Bembe présente beaucoup de points communs avec le Bwami des Lega.
Parallèlement, il existe d'autres associations secrètes comme l'Elunda et l'Alunga, dont le masque heaume est bien connu des amateurs d'art du Congo.

BEMBE Large zoomorphic Owl mask

Atypical mask, with his off-center smile that gives him a cheerful and slightly cheeky look
Called "Eluba ya butende na cwecwe" or "Emangungu" these masks were worn during the initiation rites of young people.
"The animal that dominates the heights of the forest, the master of death, is the owl (cwecwe: generic term). this mask will protect, in particular, circumcised batende against poisonous eyes of wizards" (PP Gossiaux, page 19)

The Bembe are based in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, north of Lake Tanganyika. (Do not confuse them with the Beembe who sometimes also spell Bembe and who are a people of the Kongo group)
They see themselves as the descendants of the Lega of which they are culturally close. The Bwamé of the Bembe has much in common with the Bwami of the Lega
At the same time, they have other secret associations such as Elunda and Alunga, whose mask helmets are well known by Congo art lovers.
