CONGO DRC

LUBA Large caryatid stool

This superb seat presents a very particular architecture, where the shoulders and the chest merge in a spectacular way, this one being born at the level of the elbow

This style is rare, but a neck support from the Tervuren Museum has very similar characteristics, It is published in "La tête dans les Étoiles" (see bibliography)
Photo on request
Another Luba seat also presents this particularity in "Atlantes et Caryatids" page 33
According to its former owner, this stool would have been collected in a village located a few dozen kilometers from Kongolo, on the edge of Songye country.

Which would not be at all surprising, because this work is a vigorous sculpture stylistically close to Songye art which is powerful and cubist, softened by the delicacy of the Luba artists.

The Luba are a large people of eastern DRC. Their seats with caryatids, their carriers of cups, staffs of chiefs, arrow holders, adzes and cult statues are very famous and among the most prized objects in African Art.
