CONGO DRC
Superb caryatid stool LUBA Shankadi
A big thumbs up for this seat
The stylization and architecture of this sculpture is impressive
While having the stylistic codes of the Shankadi tribe, it is exceptional in its modernity, energy and originality.
With its rocket shape, it evokes Art Deco
I have only come across one similar piece so far, Myron Kunin's stool sold by Sotheby's in 2014 (also published in
Tribal Art N°40, Spring 2006, page 96)
The Luba are a large people of eastern DRC. Their seats with caryatids, their carriers of cups, staffs of chiefs, arrow holders, adzes and cult statues are very famous and among the most prized objects in African Art.
Comes from a private collection
