AWESOME SATIMBE DOGON MASK
Among them, the Satimbe mask, or "Superior lady", or even "Sister of the masks". This one by its size and its sculpture is very rare. It is surmounted by a beautiful statuette of a young girl representing the first woman who was consecrated as a yasigine.
This remarkable mask is heavy, very delicate to wear, even for an experienced dancer. This mask has a sense of perfection in keeping with the myth of yasigine. It is an aesthetic emotion of creation.
The yasigine was the first woman to find the fibers and was given a cowrie belt and a long-handled gourd as her badge. Her birth must take place during the holidays or during the previous three months: she must be the daughter of yasigine (but will only obtain this title on her death), and, moreover, have been designated by the Council of Elders (actually detected by divination).
To be enthroned, the yasigine makes the offering of a bar of salt of a cubit, ten jars of beer, three baskets of sesame, three of tobacco, one of condiments. She must prepare the sesame oil for the rituals.
The ritual calabash of the yasigine is picked by his family at the time of the Sigui. She is the only woman who can approach the dancers and take part in the initiation parties.
ORIGIN:
This mask, as well as other objects, was collected by Eliane Prévost, a French ethnologist who stayed with the Dogon and wrote various books for Editions L'Harmattan.
